When you have a great deal of content to create and manage, you might consider outsourcing. Believe it or not, there are people out there, like ME, that enjoy getting your content out into the world.

One good reason to outsource is that as your business grows, so do your content needs. Or, you may choose to hire someone because you don’t enjoy writing or feel you aren’t good at it. Or, you could be a good writer but have no time or interest in using all the different mediums to get your content out in front of your niche market. You would be amazed at how many people feel this way too! Rest assured, you are not the only one.

Hiring a writer can also improve your content by bringing a fresh perspective. They probably have ideas that are different than yours.

But before you start hiring, you should be aware of the potential pitfalls you might encounter:

  • The writer may not have your knowledge or expertise. The key to your brand is this unique value that you offer.
  • If your writer doesn’t clearly understand your brand, they could hurt it by producing content that’s not consistent.
  • Your content can lose the personal touch. It needs to be in your voice to resonate with your audience.
  • It’s expensive to hire a quality writer.

Luckily, there are a few ways you can mitigate these risks.

One way is to create training materials and samples of what you want from the writer. You can even create a style guide so they know what tone of voice and writing style to use. This alone will save your hours of work and heartbreak.

Another idea is to outsource only some parts of the writing process. There might be some content you can have written by others, but some you need to do yourself. For example, you may want to write your sales page copy but outsource your nurture sequence emails.

You can also make sure you’re the senior editor. Check everything your writer or team of writers produce for you before publishing and make the necessary edits.
